Sowing Seeds of Empowerment: The SOHO Bakery Project in Eswatini
Introduction:
In June 2023, Dr. Williams Peprah, an Associate Professor of Finance at Andrews University, embarked on a transformative mission in partnership with Oakwood College, setting his sights on Eswatini. The purpose of his journey was to explore the potential of a small bakery project that would not only generate additional revenue for Saving Orphans through Health and Outreach (SOHO) but also provide baking training to young women who have benefited from the program. This initiative seeks to create sustainable opportunities and empower vulnerable children and orphans through comprehensive, Christ-centered programs.
The Vision of SOHO:
At the heart of their mission, SOHO is dedicated to changing the lives of orphans and vulnerable children, particularly those in child-headed households, by offering hope, holistic care, and Christ-centered support. Their programs encompass vital aspects such as health, education, and empowering individuals with a sense of purpose. Fueled by a deep passion for transformation, the SOHO team is committed to making a lasting impact on the lives of those they serve.
The Role of the School of Business Administration (SBA):
Working hand in hand with SOHO, the SBA aims to establish a small bakery that not only serves as an additional revenue source but also provides baking training to young women who have benefited from SOHO’s programs. With a shared commitment to creating transformative opportunities, the faculty and students of the SBA have united their expertise in process development, web development, marketing, business growth, and financial accountability. Through this collaborative effort, they hope to provide essential support to SOHO and enable the implementation of life-changing programs in Eswatini.
Empowering Young Women:
At the core of this project lies the empowerment of young women who have experienced abuse. The small bakery not only equips them with valuable skills but also nurtures their self-confidence and independence. The ultimate goal is to provide these resilient individuals with the necessary tools to lead fulfilling lives and contribute to the betterment of their communities. Rural Tech Hive, a key partner in this endeavor, will offer assistance in managing and implementing a Point-of-Sale system, ensuring financial transparency and inventory control.
Engaging Students and Associations:
The SBA recognizes the immense value of student involvement in this endeavor. As the project progresses, various components will be introduced to student associations and clubs, encouraging active participation. Multiple classes within the SBA will have the opportunity to contribute their expertise, fostering process development, web development, marketing strategies, business growth, and financial accountability. By engaging students in real-world projects, the SBA aims to inspire a sense of purpose and a passion for making a positive impact.
Conclusion:
The SOHO Bakery Project in Eswatini represents a journey driven by compassion, resilience, and a shared vision of transforming lives. Through the collaborative efforts of Andrews University, SOHO, and Rural Tech Hive, a path is being paved towards sustainable change and empowerment. By empowering young women and generating additional revenue, the project aims to support SOHO’s transformative programs for vulnerable children and orphans in Eswatini. Together, they are sowing seeds of hope and nurturing a brighter future for those in need.
